2142. It's been more than two decades since NASA devoted itself to achieving interstellar travel. Now, after 8 long years of near-light-speed flight, a ship known as the USI Columbus has arrived at the planetary system orbiting a small blue-white star christened Ouranos.
The reason they're there?
Life.
24 years ago, one of NASA's routine probes was returned to earth with a response to the encoded message it carried. Eager to meet their new pen pals, NASA formed an offshoot called DRALST, nicknamed "Starfleet Academy" by the public. They worked for 13 years to create the ISV-1, now known as the Columbus.
Now the Terrans and a peaceful, intelligent, animal-like race called the Krii have met at the Ouranos system.
The Krii are there for a very different reason than the Terrans: one of their ships disappeared here several years previous. The Krii and the Terrans have allied to search for the missing Krii ship - but now individuals on both sides are disappearing from their ships, and each race is becoming suspicious of the other...
